Treat a platform as a pathway, not a model label
A platform can mean a search feature, an assistant retrieving public pages, a workplace assistant using connected files, or voice speaking a selected result. These are different routes: a URL may be indexed but not selected, while a user triggered fetch can differ from automatic crawling. Agencies should assess each pathway separately: discovery, access, source display, and observable evidence. A citation is not necessarily a visit. Rankwox treats platform AEO as a map of documented mechanisms, not a placement promise.
Compare the documented pathways before changing a site
Use this summary to choose which official guidance and evidence to review; it is not a citation formula.
| Surface | What the primary source distinguishes | Useful first check |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Search index and snippet eligibility; AI activity appears in overall Search Console Web reporting. | Check Googlebot access, indexing, snippet controls, and visible content. |
| ChatGPT Search | OAI SearchBot is distinct from GPTBot and user action ChatGPT User. | Set access by purpose; inspect robots.txt and server logs. |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot supports search; Perplexity User serves user requested fetches. | Check crawler policy and WAF behavior separately. |
| Bing and Copilot | Bing search foundations support grounding; AI Performance summarizes citations. | Check discovery and indexing; treat report data as sampled. |
| Gemini Apps | Some responses show sources, which can include public sites or connected user files. | Inspect sources when shown; do not generalize across modes. |
Google: resolve Search eligibility before inventing an AI tactic
Google’s guidance is direct: existing SEO practices remain relevant, with no extra requirement or special optimization for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet, but eligibility does not guarantee crawling or display. Check Googlebot access, internal links, text availability, and whether structured data matches visible content; special schema is not required.
See Google’s AI features guidance before proposing an AI markup sprint, and the Google AI Overviews optimization guide for a focused page level workflow. Search Console includes AI feature activity in overall Web reporting, not a complete citation ledger.
ChatGPT Search and Perplexity: distinguish bots by purpose
Do not report simply that “the AI bot” is allowed. OpenAI separates OAI SearchBot for ChatGPT Search, GPTBot for content that may be used in model training, and ChatGPT User for certain user requested actions. Opting out of OAI SearchBot affects appearance in ChatGPT search answers; it is not interchangeable with the other controls. See OpenAI’s crawler documentation, the ChatGPT Search optimization guide, and the Perplexity SEO guide for product specific workflows.
Perplexity distinguishes PerplexityBot for search from Perplexity User for user actions; its guide says user requested fetches generally ignore robots.txt. These permissions enable documented access, not a citation. Check firewall and CDN rules as well as robots.txt.
Bing and Copilot: protect discoverability and interpret reporting narrowly
Bing’s guidelines connect crawlability, indexing, canonicalization, links, and clear content with eligibility in search and grounding experiences. Microsoft says Copilot Chat can generate a short query from a prompt and send it to Bing when web search is enabled; users can inspect the query and sources. Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report lists cited pages and grouped grounding queries, but Microsoft says its data is sampled and aggregated, omits individual prompts and answers, and cannot explain why a URL was cited.
Treat a trend as a signal to investigate, not proof that a page edit caused it.
Gemini and voice experiences need their own evidence
Google’s Gemini Apps help says some responses show sources and related links, which may include public websites or a user’s uploaded and connected files. This does not mean every Gemini mode uses web sources identically. Voice answers also depend on the underlying search or assistant, device, settings, and answer format; do not promise spoken placement from a markup change. Test representative questions on the actual surface and note whether a source is named or linked.
See how Gemini retrieves answers and the voice search AEO guide.
Build a measurement plan around observable evidence
No dashboard captures total answer engine visibility. Google includes AI feature activity in overall Web performance; Bing’s AI Performance summarizes citations and grouped queries with sampling and attribution limits. Separate four evidence types in client reports: indexing eligibility; observed answers or citations; referral visits and engagement; and business outcomes. A citation is not a click, and a click is not a conversion. Record the date, query, product, context, cited URL, and capture method; repeat tests consistently and disclose missing data.

A practical platform review for an agency team
A focused review turns product documentation into site checks without promising a client outcome. Choose questions and products that matter to the business. An answer first content brief can standardize editorial review; access controls need a separate technical check.
- 01Name the exact surface and record relevant product, account, or location settings.
- 02Read current official guidance for its discovery route, access controls, and available evidence.
- 03Check status, canonical URL, robots and meta directives, rendering, text, internal links, and claim support.
- 04Set a dated baseline; distinguish individual observations from aggregate reports and note data gaps.
- 05Make a documented improvement, reassess later, and report citations separately from visits and conversions; do not claim causation without evidence.
Key takeaways
- Shared foundations crawlability, clear information, useful evidence, and sound site structure remain more reliable than platform specific hacks.
- Crawler permissions can govern different activities; check the exact bot and product documentation before changing access policy.
- A search result, an assistant’s user triggered fetch, a visible citation, a referral visit, and a conversion are different events.
- Platform dashboards are partial evidence. Report what they measure, what they omit, and what cannot be attributed.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different for every platform?+
The foundations overlap, but retrieval, access rules, and reporting differ. OpenAI’s crawler documentation and Perplexity’s crawler guide show why one platform’s checklist should not be copied to another.
Does Google require special schema for AI Overviews?+
No. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special schema. A page still needs to be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet; eligibility does not guarantee selection or display.
If I allow an AI crawler, will the platform cite my page?+
No. Permission enables a documented kind of access, not indexing, retrieval, or citation. OpenAI’s bot guide explains that its search and user action bots have different purposes.
Can an agency prove an optimization caused more citations?+
Not from citation counts alone. Bing’s AI Performance guidance says the data is sampled and does not explain why a page was cited. Use dated observations and report citations separately from visits and business outcomes.
