Choose tools by the question you need answered
Start with a question, not a vendor’s “AI visibility” label. Do you need Google exposure, Bing citation trends, a crawl or markup diagnosis, or evidence that visits lead to enquiries? Each requires a different signal. For most teams, the practical core is two platform reports, a crawler, a markup test, existing analytics, and a shared worksheet. A paid monitoring product is optional; first establish what its data actually represents.
| Tool or method | Useful for | Not a measure of |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Google AI feature impressions | Clicks or citation counts |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Cited pages and query themes | All prompts or answers |
| Crawler and validators | Technical and markup checks | Citation forecasts |
| Analytics and observation log | Visits, outcomes, and examples | Proof of causation |
Use Search Console for Google AI visibility
Google’s Search Console Generative AI performance report covers impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. It groups results by page, country, date, and device, helping teams see which landing pages receive exposure. Google says the report rolled out worldwide on August 31, 2026. If it is absent, the property may not yet have enough impressions in these features.
An impression means a link was shown in a generative feature; it is not a click, confirmed passage citation, or business result. Chart and table totals can differ because some data is aggregated by property and some by page. Compare consistent periods and investigate trends without claiming that one edit caused them. See Google’s report documentation.
| View | Question it helps answer |
|---|---|
| Pages | Which URLs receive impressions? |
| Country or device | Where does exposure differ? |
| Dates | Is a change sustained? |
Read Bing citations as a separate signal
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report summarizes visible citations across Microsoft Copilot, AI generated Bing summaries, and select partner experiences. It shows cited pages, trends, and grouped grounding queries: short phrases associated with content retrieval. Compare pages or query themes to identify useful editorial questions, such as whether a support guide or service page appears for a relevant topic.
The report does not show full prompts or answers, and its aggregated sample is not a complete log. Bing says trends cannot be attributed to one update or model change. A citation is neither a click nor an endorsement. Keep Bing’s counts separate from Google impressions and consult Bing’s report documentation for metric definitions. For platform context, see the Bing Copilot guide.
- 01Compare consistent date ranges.
- 02Identify relevant pages and query themes.
- 03Inspect the pages for accurate answers and evidence.
- 04Record a follow up date; do not assign a cause to one movement.
Crawl the site and inspect important URLs
A crawler reveals site wide problems that visibility reports do not. Screaming Frog SEO Spider can review discovered URLs, internal links, response codes, titles, directives, canonicals, and extracted structured data. For example, a new location page might have no internal links or an unintended noindex directive. Those are actionable findings, not proof that an answer engine will cite it. The Screaming Frog user guide documents crawl configuration and extraction.
For a specific Google URL, Search Console’s URL Inspection shows indexed information and offers a live test. A changed live page may differ from Google’s last indexed version; an indexable status does not guarantee search display. Use URL Inspection to investigate a missing page, then a crawl to look for site wide patterns. Google explains the distinction in its URL Inspection documentation.
- 01Crawl the canonical site and review high value URLs first.
- 02Check links, directives, responses, and rendered content as needed.
- 03Compare indexed and live URL Inspection views.
- 04Fix the cause and recrawl.
Validate structured data for supported features
Google’s Rich Results Test checks public pages for markup that can generate supported rich results. Use it when a template change may have broken relevant structured data. A passing test does not guarantee a rich result, correct every property, or indicate AI citation potential. Google says markup should describe visible page content; its structured data documentation recommends testing during development.
Do not add schema just because a vendor calls it an AEO ranking lever. Google states there are no extra technical requirements or special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode; ordinary Search eligibility applies, and appearance is not guaranteed. Explore the Rankwox JSON LD schema library and schema validation guide for implementation help.
- 01Add markup only when it describes visible content and serves a supported purpose.
- 02Test a representative page and fix relevant errors.
- 03Recheck the live template after deployment.
Use manual answer checks for missing context
Dashboards do not show every answer or its full context. Keep a small log for priority questions across target platforms. Record date, exact query, language or market, answer surface, whether the brand or URL appeared, cited URL, and a note on accuracy. Repeat checks periodically because answers can vary; one observation is not a market wide result.
Do not call a handful of checks “share of voice” unless the query set and sampling method are defined. If an answer cites a page, verify that its passage supports the claim. Note mismatches and review clarity, evidence, and freshness. The AEO content brief template helps turn recurring customer questions into useful, supportable pages.
- 01Choose a stable set of important questions.
- 02Record platform, date, query, and citations consistently.
- 03Describe the sample and compare repeated checks cautiously.
Connect visibility with visits and business outcomes
Use existing analytics and lead or sales records to see whether landing page visits lead to actions that matter: a qualified enquiry, demo request, purchase, or support interaction. Impressions, citations, sessions, and conversions are different measures; do not combine them into an unexplained “AI score.”
Attribution is easy to overstate. Someone may see a citation and later arrive through another channel, while analytics may not identify the original answer. Report what changed and label causal explanations as hypotheses unless your measurement design supports them. The AEO KPIs and tracking guide can help define metrics before a client review.
| Metric | Can indicate | Does not prove alone |
|---|---|---|
| AI impressions | Platform exposure trend | Visits or citations |
| Visible citations | Cited page activity | Traffic or endorsement |
| Sessions and enquiries | Page activity and outcomes | AI caused the outcome |
Choose a lean stack and review it consistently
A small business can start with first party reports, a crawler, Google’s markup test, current analytics, and a spreadsheet. Agencies may standardize a dashboard, but should preserve each platform’s definitions and each client’s goals. Before buying a commercial monitor, check surface coverage, query sampling, export options, locations, languages, and whether results are observations or modeled estimates.
Review comparable date ranges, investigate pages with meaningful changes, fix evidenced technical issues, check a small set of answers, and annotate edits and outcomes. This creates a useful record, not a universal performance score. For a broader workflow, visit the AEO resources hub and AEO audits hub.
Key takeaways
- Treat Google and Bing reports as separate platform specific signals.
- Use crawlers and validators to diagnose issues, not forecast citations.
- Make manual answer checks dated and reproducible; they remain a limited sample.
- Report impressions, citations, visits, and conversions separately.
Frequently asked questions
Is one tool able to track every answer engine?+
No single tool in these official reports covers every answer engine. Google reports defined Search features; Bing reports supported Microsoft and partner experiences. Check any additional product’s coverage and sampling before comparing totals.
Does a structured data test improve the chance of an AI citation?+
A test can find markup issues for supported rich results, but it is not a citation signal or guarantee. Google says special schema is not required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use accurate markup for visible content and a supported purpose.
Why might Google’s AI performance report be missing?+
Google says it may not appear when a site has not received enough impressions in generative AI features. Check the property and current documentation. Its absence alone does not diagnose a page level technical problem.
Can Bing citations be compared directly with Google impressions?+
No. Google counts impressions in specified AI Search features; Bing summarizes visible citations in supported experiences. Trend each on its own terms, then compare with site analytics without adding unlike counts together.
